List of the questions answered on this page

Q: How does it work? What is IAS?

A: Based on a patented and original technology, Intomic Antispam Solution (IAS) will inspect your mailbox to detect any potential spam, on a periodic basis (see IAS Plans) and organise your mailbox.

Once you have registered, several folders will automatically be created in your mailbox (this is totally transparent for you).
Intomic IAS will then start inspecting your mailbox and move the emails you receive according to their probable type, as follow :

Type of email Folder Comment
Spams spams junk email that you probably do not want
Learn learn you can move in this folder emails that you want Intomic IAS to recognise as junk in the future
Trusted trusted you can move in this folder emails from people you trust, to tell Intomic IAS to always accept them in the future
Unwanted blacklist you can move in this folder emails sent by people you do not want to read from, so Intomic IAS will always classified them as spam in the future (hence moving them into the spams folder)

Usually, you will not have to to read (synchronise) the messages located in these special folders.

Once a spam has been identified, it is automatically placed into the "spams" folder of your mailbox so it does not appear to you when you read your email. You do not even have to download the messages in this "spams" folder, to save time and dialup costs. However, you can easily configure your email program to access and check this special "spams" folder if you wish to do so.

If an email from a person you trust, such as a friend or a relative, was inadvertently moved to the "spams" folder by Intomic IAS, you would only have to move it to the "trusted" folder (just do a Drag&Drop). Next time Intomic IAS will check your mailbox, it will learn about your new trusted and make sure you always receive their emails in the future.

You can move any email into the "blacklist" folder so that any future email sent by this person will always be moved into the "spams" folder.

At any time, you can move an email to either the "trusted" or "blacklist" folder, to change its sender status to wanted or unwanted in the future - just doing a single, easy Drag&Drop operation! Which other anti-spam solution offers you such a friendly and easy-to-use approach?

If, by mistake, an junk email was received, just move it to the "learn" folder. Next time Intomic IAS will check your mailbox, it will learn and delete this
email forever.

In just a few Drag&Drop operations, using your current email program, you will easily manage to keep your mailbox clean and spam free!

Q: My email/Internet provider can only support POP email access. Will IAS work for me?

A: Yes, but with just a few limitations, i.e the IAS folders (see previous question) will no be created and the drag&drop facilities will not be accessible. However, Intomic IAS will clean spam from your mailbox. Spam messages will be stored for 10 days, so you may possibly recover them if you want to. After this period, they will be permanently removed.
Plus, IAS allows you to very simply manage a list of trusted and blacklisted senders, even using a POP email account.
(If you want to benefit from all Intomic IAS functionalities, please ask your email provider to support the IMAP protocol.)
NEW: Intomic offers a FREE email address which is IMAP compatible and of course spam protected to its individual registered users! So you can now benefit of all Intomic IAS functionalities, even if your current email provider does not support the IMAP protocol!

Q: What are POP and IMAP protocols

A: POP and IMAP procotols are a communication languages between your computer and your email server (or provider). POP is an older standard, still in use today, that has a very limited number of functionalities compared to the more recent IMAP standard. At any time, you can upgrade your account to IMAP and benefit of additional functionalities with IAS. Please note that the availability of the IMAP protocol is solely under the control of your Internet/Email provider - this is not an Intomic IAS limitation. If you want to learn more about these, read the excellent articles available on Wikipedia on IMAP (here) and POP (here).

Q: How do I configure my email program?

A: This depends on your email program, i.e. Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Eudora...

Firt of all, you need to collect the following information:

  • The type of e-mail server you use: POP or IMAP
  • The name of the incoming e-mail server, usually something like pop3.domain.com or imap.somedomain.org...
  • Your email account username (or login) and password

With Mozilla Thunderbird

Click on "Create a new email account" and fill:
Thunderbird setup 1
then simply follow the instructions, or read here.

With Microsoft Outlook

First create a new email account in Tools->Accounts->Add
Outlook setup 1

On the E-mail Server Names page, select the type of server (i.e. POP or IMAP) and fill:
Outlook setup 2

If you have selected an IMAP server, you need to synchronise the folder list in Outlook as follow:

  • Click the IMAP server node in the folder list.
  • Click IMAP Folders.
  • Click Reset List.
  • Click the folder name in the folder list, and then click Show.
  • Click OK.

Q: I am reading my email using a web browser. Will IAS work for me?

A: Yes, it will. If your email provider offers you access to your email using both a web browser and an email program, then Intomic IAS will perfectly work with both and your mailbox will stay clean. Forget about these dozens (or more!) of junk emails you must browse through before you can find the email you are waiting for...

Q: Will anyone at Intomic read my emails?

A: No. Intomic IAS service is operated by computer systems. However, when you ask Intomic IAS to learn a new spam by moving it to the "learn" folder, we may manually check its content (but not always). As we believe messages you have moved to the "learn" folder to be junk mail, you should probably no be concerned by us analysing its content so it could automatically be indentified as spam in the future (if you are, just delete the message yourself!).

Intomic IAS robots scan thousands of emails everyday... imagine how long would have to be our payroll if we had to read them!

Q: Why do you need my email password? How secure is it?

We understand your concern about communicating your email account password to our systems.

But think about it twice before you become too much worried about it! Intomic IAS is at least as secure, if not more, than many other antispam solutions available today.

Here is why. First of all, remember than unless you are using encrypted emails (in which case even Intomic IAS cannot read their content), your email messages travel all around the globe, on the Internet, before reaching your mailbox. Anyone who has the ability to do so can therefore read their contents.

As a matter of fact, any antispam technology must have access to your email content to be able to filter spam.

Remember that your email account hosting provider (and their technicians) already know your password.

Each time you check your email (i.e. login into your email server), your username and password do travel on the Internet.

Other antispam solutions either require you to install a software on your computer or will be seating between your email server and you (such as redirecting the MX address of your email server). In other words, these solutions have a total access to all the content of your email, even if they may not have your password! And if a piece of software is installed on your computer, remember that it may also access to any data stored on your computer, so please be very careful especially when installing "freeware" antispam software: you never know what exactly this piece of software is actually doing - it may very well collect information for spammers without you even thinking about it.

Intomic IAS solution does not require any software to be installed, neither on your computer nor on your servers. Therefore, the only information our robots have access to is the content of your mailbox.

Intomic IAS is safer than any other solution because if you decided, at any time, to change your password without letting you know about it, our robots would simply stop having any access to your mailbox (and obviously wouldn't be able to check for spam anymore!).

At Intomic IAS Ltd, we use state-of-the-art security to protect your data.

Q: Does Intomic keep copies of my emails? How safe is it?

A: No. We do not keep any copy of your emails (we only may do so with spam). All your messages (but spam) remain stored on your current email account provider systems.

As for safety, IAS will always try to connect to your email account servers using secured encrypted connection (SSL) whenever such security system is available from your current provider.

Very obvious spam messages are immediately deleted.

If you are using a POP email account, our robots will keep messages with a high spam risk ranking for 5 days so you have a chance to recover them if you wish to do so (you will be informed, by email, about these messages once every 5 days).

At Intomic IAS Ltd, we use state-of-the-art security to protect your data.

Q: How do I access the different folders using my current email program?

A: Most people use programs (such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird or Qualcomm Eudora for example) to read their emails. All these programs can easily be setup to read folder in an IMAP compatible mailbox. Most Internet providers and email services support the IMAP protocol (a standardised language used between computers to access and read email mailboxes). If you are not sure whether your current email service provider supports the IMAP protocol, ask to their technical support. Alternatively, ask us about it here.

Q: How often is my mailbox cleaned by Intomic Antispam Solution?

A: Your mailbox is cleaned at least every 8 - 15 minutes (more often for Corporate Solutions), depending on network conditions.

Q: Will any of my emails be moved or lost?

A: No, Intomic Antispam Solution does not delete any information from your email account. When you register to Intomic Antispam Solution, several new folders will be automatically created in your mailbox. The first one is named "spams"and will receive the emails addressed to you by potential spammers.

If you use an POP email account, spam will be temporary moved to our servers for 10 days, after what they will be destroyed (unless you recover them as explained above). Also when you are using an POP email account, messages that appears to have a very high probability of being spam may be immediately deleted (this does not occur when using an IMAP based email account).

Q: What are the advantages of using Intomic antispam solution?

A: Re-discover the pleasure of enjoying a spam free email experience! That's as simple as that... Moreover, if you connect to your email account using a slow or expensive connexion (dialup or mobile network), using Intomic Antispam Solution will greatly reduce your cost and time (if you are affected by spams). Intomic IAS works whichever operating system or computer you may use (PC, Mac, Mac OX, Windows, Linux, web access, ect...).

Q: What about if I am traveling or accessing my mailbox from different locations?

A: This is precisely what Internet stands for: allowing you to work from any place connected to the network. Intomic IAS will work as well from whichever location you are working from, as no program needs to be installed on your own computer. You only need to setup your account with us once and that's all.

Q: What don't Intomic offer a web management interface for my account?

A: Because none of our servers are accessible from outside our premises, Intomic is a very safe solution. This way, you know your personal data are safe too. Spammers would very fast attack and possibly block any web management interface we could think of - this has happened to several other companies already. Our unique technology allows for all management operations to be very simply performed from your own email account. At Intomic, we take safety very seriously.

Q: What about if I change my mailbox password?

A: When you change your email account password (with your email service provider), you will also need to update your registration details for your Intomic account. If you do not update your Intomic account, IAS will NOT be able to clean your mailbox anymore (we will send you an email to inform you of any problem related to a possible change of password).

Q: What about if I want to change my email account provider?

A: Simply update your details and email account information here.
Your subscription will continue on your new email account, with no additional costs. You can make how many changes you want during your subscription period: that's another free service from Intomic IAS!

Q: Do I need to change my computer settings?

A: Probably not (or eventually just a little bit)! If your email program (such as Outlook or Eudora for example) is configured to access your email account using the IMAP protocol, then you have nothing else to do. If your email program is configured to access your email account using the POP protocol, then you will simply have to change your settings as described in the confirmation email we will send you after registering with us. This is very easy and does not affect your email access from any other computer. Our Customer support service will gladly help you with these changes (and... that's a free service!).

Q: Do I need any software to be installed on my computer?

A: No! You do not need any new software to be installed on your computer to benefit of Intomic IAS. Which also means no need for software updates. Plus, you can access your cleaned mailbox from any computer in the world as long as it is connected to the Net (and that your current email service provider allows you to!).

Q: I often work from home or from my hotel room: can I still benefit from a clean email mailbox from anywhere?

A: Yes, you can access your cleaned mailbox from any computer in the world as long as it is connected to the Net (and that your current email service provider allows you to!).

Q: What will happen at the end of the trial period?

A: We will contact you by email to ask for your feedback and give you the option to register to one of the Intomic IAS service plans. If you decide not to register, Intomic IAS will be removed from your account (leaving it the way it was before your registration to IAS). This is totally transparent to you and does not require you to perform any changes to your email account. We will also delete from our systems all the information you provided us when registering for the trial period.

Q: Can I use Intomic IAS with my email account on Xtra (www.xtra.co.nz)?

A: Yes you can! Generally, Xtra does not allow remote access to email accounts they provide from other networks, unless you subscribe to Xtra's Secure Remote Access service (see www.xtra.co.nz -> Help -> Remote Mail Settings). However, we are now able to fully serve Xtra customers, so you will be able to use Intomic IAS without having to subscribe to Xtra's Secure Remote Access. (Intomic and Xtra are independant and unrelated companies).

Q: Is Intomic Antispam Solution better than my current spam protection?

A: If you are asking this question, chances are that you are not fully satisfied with your current solution! Why don't you simply give Intomic IAS a try: that's free for one week, see here ? You'll be positively surprised how pleasant spam free email can be!

Q: Can I use Intomic Antispam Solution on purely web based email accounts?

A: Some email providers do only offer email accounts that can be accessed from a web browser (such as Yahoo! or Hotmail for example). At the current time, you cannot benefit from Intomic IAS with these services. (Yahoo! and Hotmail are registered trademarks of their respective owners and are unrelated to Intomic).

Q: Can I continue do use my current antispam protection setup?

A: You do not need to, but there is no problem if you want to do so! Intomic IAS will not interfere with any existing antispam solution- that's another advantage of Intomic IAS. However, if your current protection system gives you too many false spam (i.e. wanted emails wrongly classified as spam), you should stop using it so that Intomic IAS can classify all your emails correctly.

Q: What about if I want to protect more than one email account?

A: Each subscription allows you to benefit from Intomic IAS on one (1) email account . If you have more than one email account, you may either redirect them onto one of your protected accounts, or register to addtional subscriptions for each account or open a business account if you have more than 5 accounts. Remember: Intomic IAS is probably cheaper than one coffee monthly!

Q: I have just registered to Intomic IAS and cannot read my email anymore...

A: First of all, don't worry none of you messages has been lost, they are just "hidden"!

If this happens, it is because you are using an IMAP email server (and that's great because you can fully enjoy Intomic IAS functionalities...).

After Intomic IAS has been activated onto your email account, new messages will be checked for spam. In order to see these messages, you must update the inbox folders list on your email software (usually using the "Update folders list" or "Download complete folders list" functions of your email software). Once you have performed this operation, you will be able to see all the folders created by Intomic IAS (see here). You may also need to "subscribe" to these new folders to tell your email software to download their contents (i.e. the messages they contain), using the "Subscribe to folder" function of your email software. Most of the time, you would probably not need to subscribe to the "spams" folder unless you really want to read spam...

Also remember that you don't need to subscribe to the root Inbox folder (i.e. the INBOX folder itself) anymore.

Q: Clicking on a report link opens a web page instead of a new message...

There is a well known bug with Microsoft Vista® and possibly with other Windows setup. If the email client is not configured correctly, hyperlinks to new messages (also called "mailto" links) are not processed correctly.
To check if this is your problem, simply click here.
If a new message addressed to test@nowhere.net opens, you should be fine - don't send the test email, this test address doesn't exist!
If a web page opens, your computer needs to be upgraded or adjusted.

Q: How do I setup Thunderbird for IMAP access?

Here is a brief summary of how to setup Thunderbird for IMAP access, in particular if you wish to use Intomic Mail Syndication.
Even if it may seem to be a lengthy description, don't worry this is a very straighforward one if you following each of the steps below!

First create a new account by selecting the "Create a new account" option

Then select "Email account" and enter your Identity details

If you are using Intomic Mail Syndication, enter your usual email address (not your @intomic.net address!)

In the next panel, select the IMAP type and enter "mail.intomic.net" as the Incoming Server

Use your usual outgoing (SMTP) server, usually provided by your Internet provider, for the Outgoing Server

Then enter your Intomic Mail Syndication username in the "Incoming User Name"

Last, enter any name you would like to give to this email account and close the wizard.

Select the new account you have just created and select "View settings for this account" in the right panel.

Select "Server Settings" from the left panel and next to the Server Name, enter enter 993 in the Port: field

In the "Security Settings", select the "SSL" option of the "Use secure connection" subpanel.

Select the "Copies & Folders" from the left panel and select "Place a copy in" option of the "When sending messages, automatically" panel

Immediately under the previous option, select ""Sent" Folder on: and choose the "Sent" folder of your new IMAP account that you have just created above, from the selection list.

You are done!

Optionally, you can select the "Set as Default" option after selecting your new IMAP account from the list on the left panel.

Q: I can't find the answer to my question here...

A: No worries: just contact use here, our Customer support will help you as much as we can!
